Features : There are quite a few varieties of this lovely plant which grows wild in the Mediterranean –L. officinalis is said to be the most odorous. Perched on long stems, the tiny purple –blue flower are covered with star –shaped hairs and the narrow leaves are grey/green. Lavender is extensively cultivated in England, France and Yugoslavia.

History & Mayth : One of the most popular essential oils in aromatherapy and used in healing since time immemorial. For centuries, lavender bags were placed in linen drawers to keep moths and insects at bay- its insecticidal properties being most pronounced. Also revered for its antiseptic quality by the Romans who used it to bathe and cleanse their wounds. Indeed, the Latin ‘lavare’ means ‘to wash’ once said to cure milder forms of epilepsy.

Lavender water was popular in the Elizabethan and stuart ages and was the favourite perfume of queen Henrietta Maria, wife of king Charles 1 st. English lavender was grown for a long time around mitcham in surrey, though is now cultivated extensively in Norfolk .its wonderful skin healing properties were discovered quite accidentally by the French chemist Gattfosse early last century imparts an unusual flavour to some Moroccan and French dishes.

Chemical Contants : Borneol geraniol, lavandulol, linalool [alcohols], aeranyl acetate, lavandulyl acetate, linalyl acetate [ester], cineole [ketone], caryophyllene [sesquiterpene], limonene, pinene [terpenes].

Properties : Analgesic, anticonvulsive, antidepressant antiphlogistic, antirheumatic antiseptic antispasmodic, antiviral bacteriacide carminative cholagogue cicatrisant cordial cytophylactic decongestant deodorant detoxicant diuretic emmenagogue fungicide hypotensive nervine restorative sedative splenetic sudorific vulnerary.

Precautions : Some people with low blood pressure may feel a bit dull and drowsy after using this oil. It is an emmenagogue too, so best avoided in the early months of pregnancy.

Effect Skin : Valuable for most skin conditions since it promotes the growth of new cells and exerts a balancing action on sebum. It has a pronounced healing effect on burns and sunburn and helpful in cases of acne, eczema and psoriasis. also said to heal abscesses, scarring and gangrenous wounds. An effective hair tonic too and may be of service in cases of alopecia.
