This methods gives a recovery of 0.01-0.015% which is significantly lower than the other method described later. 2:-direct fired distillation unit (hydro-steam distillation) the unit consist of a kettle (still),a column, condensor and receiver.the whole unit can be of copper or stainless steel. The capacity of still may rang from 100-200 kg flower per batch. To increase the fuel efficiency and to generate sufficient steam, fume tubes are fitted in the bottem of the still. The outlet of the receiver is connected with the column to recycle the condensate into the still, after the separation of oil takes place in the receiver. This process is known as “cohobation” which has been found to improve the recovery of oil. The plant is simple in operation and can be operated by a semi skilled woeker. Direct fierd plant takes cost rs. 2.5 – 3.0 lacs, if made out of stainless steel. The plant takes about 4-6 hrs per batch for completion of distillation. 3:-boiller operated unit (steam distillation) this the most modern method of distillation and suitable for large scale production of oil. The whole plant consist of three units, a distillation unit and a cohobation unit.flower are charged in the distillation unit and distilled after passing through a receiver fed to another still through cohobation column to ensure complete recovery if oil. The part of the oil is also collected from first receiver and the remaining from the second. It is advantageous to collect the distillate from the second separator and feed back it to the distillation tank in place of fresh water. Complete distillation in boiler operated distillation unit take 4-5 hrs. The oil recovery veries from 0.025% - 0.03%. Depending upon the capacity of the boiler, the unit may cost rs 7-9 lacs. Features : A hardy grass, grown mainly in Sri Lanka and java though also found in Burma, Madagascar Guatemala and south America. It was formerly known as andropogon nardus. The plant reaches to about three feet and has long slender leaves which flower when left in their natural state. Preference is given to distillation of the dried grass rather than the fresh material which would require too much fuel and is said to yield an oil of less agreeable odour.

History & Myth : Originally grown in Sri Lanka and came into vogue in the last century. The first shipment of oil to Europe was known as �oleum siree�. Sri Lanka was the main exporter until 1890, when java started producing the oil, apparently of superior quality. It contained greater quantities of geraniol [alcohol] and has a stronger odour. The Sri Lankan oil had evidently been adulterated with kerosene to reduce its price. For some time, citronella was a popular ingredient in wax candles which helped to deter mosquitoes. The oil is used extensively as an ingredient in perfumes, soaps, skin lotions, polishes, detergents and deodorizing cosmetics. Adds an interesting aroma to some Chinese food flavours.

Thus, the coastal belt of southerm India may be suited for cultivation of patchouli as a crop and inter crop in plantation crops. Patchouli oil is one the most important and valuable perfumer�s raw material. It imparts strength, character, alluring notes and lasting qualities, patchouli oil is equally indispensable in soaps and cosmetics, Patchouli is grown mainly in Indonesia, Malaysia,China and lesser extent in Madagascar, Reunion and Seychelles 20 . Patchouli was introduced into India long back and varions cultivars are being evaluated of its suitability to tropical humid south Indian conditions. Patchiuli oil is obtained by steam distillation of the non- fermented dried leaves of the plant where cyclil sesquiterpenes were accumulated that is very substantive that the oil improves with age. Newly distilled patchouli has a fresh green slightly harsh aroma. As the oil ages , It mellows considerably becoming sweeter and balsamic . Patchouli oil is about 2000 tons per year. Indonesia till today meets 80-90% of total requirement of this oil. Patchouli oil is mobile. Pale yellow to brown in colcur with a powerful balsamic woody and slightly camphoraceous odour . The oil improvers with age and odour. Is disliked if it is too fresh or insufficient matured. The typical patchouli alcohol content is 30.0%(min).The oil from Chinese origin has different composition
having a lower patchouli alcohol content (15-24%) than the Indonesian origin (30-35%)The oil may contain a peak corresponding to a-gurjunene.This may be due to the addition of gurjun balsam to the oil.Recently ,the patchouli oil from Indonesia was analyzed and found the presence of y-gurjenene(2.2%) from the oil supplied by M/S Jean Niel Society(grasse,France).As such , the presence of y-gurjenene can not be confirmed because the oil was not distilled from the dry leaves of patchouli in the lab.
